Acton, Massachusetts

Acton is a suburban town in Middlesex County located approximately 21 miles northwest of Boston and approximately 10 miles southwest of Lowell. Acton covers an area of approximately 20.3 square miles, with a population of approximately 21,924 according to the 2010 census. It is primarily a residential community, with retail shops and service facilities located along Routes 27, 111, and 2A. In addition to a number of shops and professional services, the town also has a number of banks and restaurants. It was ranked "11th Best Place to Live Among Small Towns in the Country" by Money Magazine in 2015. Acton has a regional school system with the neighboring town of Boxborough. The five elementary schools are classified as "open enrollment", whereby parents of children entering kindergarten can enroll their child in their choice of the schools - each having a different learning style. There is also one Junior High School (Grades 7-8); a Pre-School; and an acclaimed, award-winning High School. In 2009, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Acton-Boxborough High #3 among open enrollment schools and #7 overall for STEM education in the U.S.; and in 2014, Boston Magazine rated Acton-Boxborough as the 3rd best public school. Acton has a number of parks, conservation areas, playgrounds and recreational areas. Acton is accessed via Route 2, 2A, 62, 111 and 119. It is approximately 5 miles from Route 495, and 10 miles from I-95/Route 128. MBTA commuter rail service to Boston is available from South Acton and there is also a commuter bus available from Route 2A/119.
